How is your Safety Culture?

There’s no question that employees are the most valuable asset in your company. So what are you doing to keep them safe? Whether you work in a research facility, on a construction site, or at a manufacturing facility, implementing a workplace health and safety program should be more than developing a Safety Manual or preparing a set of Standard Operating Procedures or providing safety training. These are certainly essential in any organization. However, an effective program involves everyone in the corporate structure, not just the EHS manager. And it must start at the top. When management demonstrates commitment to worker health and safety, the entire organization will follow.

Here are a few signs of a robust Safety Culture…

  1. Management Commitment to employee health and safety
  2. Appropriately funded EHS program
  3. Well-written Safety Manual that is periodically reviewed and updated
  4. Effective safety training programs that are well-received and well-attended
  5. Actively engaged Safety Committee that is inclusive across all levels and departments
  6. Safety issues are addressed in a timely manner
  7. EHS Program evaluated by external auditors regularly

Of course, there are more elements that point to a robust Safety Culture. However, there’s no question that the benefits of an effective health and safety program far outweigh the costs. Over time, these investments lead to improved morale, reduced downtime, higher productivity, and ultimately better worker health.
